Our Nov 2011 outing to Farnborough Air Sciences Trust was excellent with lots of us planning to go back…there was so much to see. Our hosts started with a quick talk about the history of the centre and the first manned, powered, sustained flight in the UK by Samuel F Cody. The video of less successful attempts at flying was great fun. After refreshments we then had the talk and demonstration of the replica Cody flyer before splitting into groups and trying the Cody flight simulator, visiting the air raid shelter, the wind-tunnel, the Trident cockpit (manned on the day by an ex-pilot of that very plane!) and lots more. Thanks to all at FAST for a great day.

2011 Conkers

We ate sweet chestnuts and fought with conkers…and we were happy! Look out next year for the Bagshot Chestnut Festival!

Conkers

It chestnut session so it’s time for some conker fights and roasted chestnuts.

The official home of the world conker championships has pretty much everything you could want to know about conker fights and Woodlands Junior School in Kent has the simple explanation of the rules.

As for roasting sweet-chestnuts – they take about 20 mins to roast. Don’t forget to cut a cross in the top otherwise they’ll explode. Apparently boiling them for 20 mins and then crisping them on the fire gets the best result!

We’re organising a conker and roast chestnut event on Sat 8th Oct – meet outside St Anne’s church in Bagshot at 3pm.

Soap box go-kart

With the school summer holidays just starting, how about building a gravity go-kart? With a bit of luck the Sunningdale Go-kart challenge will run again in September but if not, there’s bound to be an opportunity to race them soon. We’ve put together some ideas and pointers to designs to get you going.

2011 Water Wars

Sunday July 3rd saw 30 hardened fighters descend on Frimley Lodge Park for the great DC4B Water Wars. After a fair amount of posturing and some “accidental” discharges (!) three teams formed – Alpha, Delta and Zulu. Delta and Zulu went first in the “capture the flag” battle and it wasn’t long before shouting and excited whoops could be heard across the woods. The lads were having a great time, but it was the dads you could hear. Alpha and Zulu went next and the battles continued. After a couple of hours some teams had won, some had lost, everyone was drenched, many were bleeding from the brambles and everyone had had a fantastic time. We finished with refreshments and a quick litter-pick (by way of thank you to the park).

Thanks to Ranger Steve Harris and the team at Frimley Lodge Park for allowing us to use the woods and to Frimley Lodge Miniature Railway for kindly letting us have water from their shed.

2011 Katakanu trip

Our trip in May to the Wokingham Waterside Centre to Katakanu was great fun. Given how windy it was, the katakanus were much easier to keep going in a straight line than a regular open canoe would have been. No one got too wet this time and we had a great game of lads v dads football followed by hot-dogs at the end. We talked about what to do for our next outing and a decided to have giant water fight (Sunday 3rd July)

DC4B trackable set free

Andy has released a DC4B trackable item in the DC4B3 geocache. The initial goal of the trackable is to visit as many geocaches as possible. You can follow its progress on the geocaching.com website.
